South Korean Actress Hwang Jung-eum Receives Suspended Sentence in $3 Million Crypto Embezzlement Case
South Korean actress Hwang Jung-eum was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence for embezzling $3 million from her agency to invest in cryptocurrencies. The Jeju District Court showed leniency after Hwang repaid the full amount and was deemed a first-time offender.
The scandal has severely impacted her career, with TV shows editing her out and advertisers cutting ties. Prosecutors had sought a three-year jail term, but judges cited restitution and her clean record as mitigating factors.
Hwang funneled 4.34 billion won ($3.1 million) from her agency in early 2022, with 4.2 billion won going directly into crypto investments. The remainder covered property taxes and credit card payments.
